The Northern Futures Pathways to Building and Construction program was developed to help participants become job-ready for the construction industry and prepare for trade apprenticeships. Delivered in partnership with The Gordon and Open Door, the program offered a practical, supportive learning environment and a clear pathway into further study or employment.
Over the course of seven weeks, participants attended classes four days per week in a small group setting. They received individual mentoring and support from Northern Futures Work and Learning Advisors, ensuring each person had the tools and guidance to succeed.
A key feature of the program was the opportunity to connect directly with industry. Through site visits and engagement with industry partners, participants were exposed to a range of trade workplaces, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers. On completion of the program, participants were eligible for up to seven units of credit toward Certificate III-level apprenticeship study.
Recent cohorts included several secondary school aged students who engaged enthusiastically with the content and activities. Their participation highlighted the broad appeal and adaptability of the program, prompting Northern Futures to explore opportunities to further develop and tailor future offerings to better support a diverse range of learners.
The program played an important role in building skills, confidence and connections for those seeking a future in the construction sector. Of the 26 participants who commenced the program, 23 successfully completed it, representing an outstanding completion rate of 88.5%. Twelve participants (46.2%) moved into employment or further study following the program.
The Pathways to Building and Construction program was funded through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Local Recovery Fund.
